ABOUT THE COMMUNITY OF CHARLESTON
Charleston is a progressive city of nearly 23,000 located in east central Illinois. Rich in the history of Abraham Lincoln, the city features a balance of industrial, agricultural, educational and cultural opportunity. Close to large metropolitan areas, access to recreational sites, business and employment opportunities, Charleston offers a full range of living experiences that are generally found in much larger communities.

The men and women residing at 12th Street have many opportunities to participate in their community. Movies, restaurants, and bowling are popular activities, as is fishing at Lake Charleston and attending cultural and fine arts events at the university. They participate in local and state Special Olympic events and often go out of town to attend concerts or go shopping. CTF has also developed opportunities for increased interaction with EIU students through Gym Rec., hosted by students in the Therapeutic Recreation Department and through the Best Buddies Program where individuals develop friendships with EIU students.
